Edna Nahshon, PhD (1988) in Performance Studies, New York University, is professor of Hebrew and Theater at the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, and senior associate of Oxford University’s Centre for Hebrew and Jewish studies.

In her work Prof. Nahshon focuses primarily on the various aspects of the intersection of Jews and theater, a subject on which she has lectured and written profusely.

Her books include Yiddish Proletarian Theatre:  the Art and Politics of the Artef, 1925-1940; the prize-winning From the Ghetto to the Melting Pot:  Israel Zangwill’s Jewish Plays and  Jews and Shoes.  Brill published two volumes which she edited and to which she contributed her own essays: Jewish Theatre:  A Global View,  and Jews and Theater in an Intercultural Context. The two books are closely related as they both concentrate on specific cases that illuminate the nexus of Jewishness and the performing arts in the US and Europe.  Nahshon is now working on a book on Jewish responses to The Merchant of Venice.
