A critical edition of the Spanish translation of Erasmus’ Morias Enkomion

In Early Modern Spain, only a limited number of the works by Erasmus was available in vernacular, due to inquisitorial censorship. In the first Spanish index of forbidden books any translation of the Praise of Folly, Erasmus’ most famous work, was explicitly prohibited, which led many scholars to believe that a Spanish Moria must have existed. Efforts to find the text were hitherto unsuccessful. The present edition, based upon the discovery of a seventeenth century manuscript of a Spanish translation of Moria extant at Ets Haim/Livraria Montezinos (Amsterdam) offers the presently only surviving proof of the existence of that translation.

Biographical note

Harm den Boer, Ph. D (1992) in Spanish Literature is a Full Professor at the Seminar für Iberoromanistik, Universität Basel. He is author of La literatura sefardí de Amsterdam (Alcalá de Henares, 1996), and a wide ranging number of articles on Early Modern Iberian Literature. He has published Spanish and Portuguese printing in the Northern Netherlands 1584-1825 (Brill, 2003), and is editor of Sephardic Editions 1550-1820 (Online Primary Source Collection, Brill).

Jorge Ledo, Ph. D (2009) at the Centre for Modern Thought (University of Aberdeen, UK), is Assistent in Iberoromanischer Literaturwissenschatf at the Institut für Iberoromanistik (Universitat Basel). He has been Visiting Assistant Professor at Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan. He is finishing his second PhD at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, an edition and study of the Ingeniosa comparación entre lo antiguo y lo presente (1539), by Cristóbal de Villalón and preparing his first dissertation (Prolegomena to the Study of Renaissance Dialogue and Conversation) for press.
